Parent Information
In the Catholic tradition, we celebrate the sacraments within the community of a local parish. The Sacrament of Baptism recognizes a commitment on the part of the parents and godparents to raise the baptized child in the Catholic faith. We therefore require that you have been active members of St. Ignatius or another Catholic parish for at least 6 months before registering your child for baptism.
As you prepare to baptize your child at St. Ignatius, we invite you to register at the parish if you are not yet part of a particular parish community. The registration form helps us develop a relationship with the many individuals and families that call St. Ignatius their spiritual home. In addition to the sacraments, St. Ignatius seeks to be a source of stability throughout a person’s life of faith and provide pastoral care when requested. As you register, you will also have an opportunity to reflect on how you would like to contribute to the parish community through your regular worship, participation in a ministry, and financial support. If you would like to register at St. Ignatius, there is a link on our opening page at www.sipdx.org, forms in the back of the church, in the parish office, or the parish can mail you an informational packet.
We recognize that there are circumstances when families are registered at another parish but they would still like to have their child baptized at St. Ignatius. If this is the case for your family, please provide the contact information of the parish where you are currently registered:

Godparent Information
The Requirements for Godparents
Selecting sponsors is an important decision, and it causes undue
problems to propose someone as a sponsor who does not meet the
Church’s requirements. You are not simply honoring friends or
relatives with a title whose responsibility ends at the conclusion
of the celebration of the baptismal rite. You are asking them to
enter a privileged faith relationship with your son or daughter.
Sponsors do not replace parents but support them in helping their
child to grow in the Catholic faith. They are not only helpers
during the Baptism itself, but throughout the child’s life.
Please consider this very carefully!
Canon Law
In common usage, sponsors are typically referred to as Godparents;
in Church Law, however, they are called sponsors. In accordance
with Canons 872, 874, 892, and 893, the Tradition of the Church
requires that, together with the parent or parents, a sponsor or
sponsors be present for the celebration of the Sacrament of
Baptism.
The role of the sponsor is to assist the parents in witnessing to
the integrity of the Catholic faith and to support the child in
living that faith. For this reason, all of the following are
required of sponsors.
A minimum of one sponsor or godparent is required for Baptism.
The sponsor does not need to be the same sex as the child. When
there are two sponsors, one must be male and the other female.
The Church has no provision for more than two sponsors.

The sponsor must be an active Catholic who lives the faith,
participates faithfully in Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days
of Obligation, and is willing to share the faith with his or
her godchild.

The sponsor must be at least sixteen years of age.

The sponsor must have received all the Sacraments of
Initiation: Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

If married, the sponsor must be in a marriage recognized by
the Catholic Church.

A person who is bound by a canonical penalty, legitimately
imposed or declared, may not serve as a sponsor.

A person who is cohabiting or civilly married, and has
neither been joined in sacramental marriage in the Catholic
Church nor received a dispensation to marry outside the
Church, may not serve as a sponsor.

Sponsors and parents must attend a Baptism class within three
years before the Baptism. This may be completed at St. Ignatius
Church or another parish. Confirmation of attendance elsewhere
must be provided before the Baptism.

The sponsor cannot be the mother or father of the child being
baptized. The role of the godparent is to assist the parents in
the formation of the child’s faith.

Non-Catholics may not act as sponsors. However, together with
a qualified Catholic sponsor and for a sufficient reason, a
baptized non-Catholic may participate as a Christian Witness.

A Catholic who is not living according to the doctrinal and
moral teaching of the Church should not be asked to serve as
a godparent.

A Catholic who has abandoned the faith may not serve as a
godparent or Christian Witness, even when active in another
Christian church or community.
